These bees have been here for at least 3 months! Take a look at that! These bees were extremely docile, the statue is located right in the middle of a parking lot located across from Bay Front Park. There is a lot of foot traffic there, mostly from people walking to and from their parked vehicles. As you guessed it, someone complained about it and reported it to the city, We get calls like this from the city all the time, sometimes from firefighters, and the police as well. These bees however, were super docile, and never attacked anyone. There are only two ways to remove them. One way is to lift the statue because it’s hollow and we could remove the combs from it. This is risky because the statue is extremely heavy and we risk damaging it. The other option unfortunately is to apply a poison treatment and then apply a seal to cover up the opening where the bees are flying in and out of the statue. The city chose not to risk damage to the statue and we had no choice but to exterminate this hive and seal up the hole. We used cement in order to seal the opening. This ensures that any potential bee infestation is prevented. We are very lucky that these bees are not aggressive, if not, many people would get stung. It was an eerie site, bees buzzing around in and from the statue. Some people would freeze, then turn and walk around the statue as if it’s a zoomba that detected a wall. Other people would just walk into the air space of hundreds of bees buzzing around without fear or a care in the world. It was an amazing spectacle. No one got hurt from this colony before, during, of after the bee removal.
