Bees Inside The Water Meter!
These bees have been here for months. As you can see, they have built quite a large hive underground! Even though during the bee removal, the video shows the delicious looking honey, you will not want to taste it. Since this hive has been underground, worms have found their way into the hive, and some portions of the honeycombs are filled with tiny worms, or maggots. It’s totally disgusting. When a hive is that close to the ground, it’s open season for all kinds of insects and critters to go all out on the honey and combs. Too many times do we find insects that range from small roaches to large palmetto bugs coming out of the hive. It’s very common to notice a hive months after it has been established. Very rarely do people usually spot a new infestation quickly. Water meters are one of those locations. It’s very low to the ground, so the bees fly below our eye level. The same applies to bee colonies above our eye level, such as a beehive on a high tree branch, or bees inside a roof. Those locations are usually not noticed until the beehive is well established and months have gone by. I remember I removed a large killer bee hive from a water meter, and found small bones of a dead animal under it. I’m still not sure to this day what kind of animal it was, whether it was a small squirrel or small mouse, we’ll never know. It was very sad to see. One of the behavioral traits that distinguishes an african bee colony from a european colony is that African killer bees make their hive in “weird” places. Bee removal from inside a water meter qualifies as a “weird” place to choose to make a bee hive.
